What is S.I.?
Student Inquiry (S.I.) is an approach to learning whereby students find and use a variety of sources of information and ideas to increase their understanding of a problem, topic, or issue of importance. It requires more than simply answering questions or getting a right answer. It espouses investigation, exploration, searching, and studying. It is enhanced by involvement with a community of learners, each learning from the other in social interaction. (Kuklthau, Maniotes &Caspari, 2007, p. 2)
Below is a cycle/process that depicts S.I. into four main categories. You can find several versions of this process out there. The one shown below has been adapted from a 'Capacity Building Series' produced by the Government of Ontario. This is just a loose depiction of what S.I. looks like in a typical classroom. Your S.I. process may look completely different!
If you are a new teacher, or new to S.I., you can use this as a guide to get things started.
REMEMBER!!! - Reflection and Feedback, between students and the teacher, are ONGOING and occurring at all times throughout the S.I. process!
